FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do the results look natural?

The results only look natural if:

  • The correct pigments are used
  • The correct needles are used
  • The right micropigmentation machine is being used
  • The right frequency is set on the micropigmentation tool
  • An experienced technician is conducting the procedure
  • The aftercare instructions are followed
  • All follow up procedures are conducted according to the instructions given to you after your procedure

The above list of requirements are standard with every procedure Benjamin Alexander SMP performs, so you can rest assured that yes, your results will look natural.

How much does the procedure cost/pricing?

The cost of the procedure depends on the severity of hair loss the individual is experiencing. Hair loss at the front of the scalp to the crown typically costs between $2,000-$3,000. An estimate can be given by viewing some images of your scalp. Please note, the true extent of your prcoedure will not be known until an in-office consultation takes place. Is Scalp Micropigmentation a tattoo?

Tattoo artists use inks that are meant to last an individual's life time. We use pigments that are meant to hold their colour for the life of the replicated follicles, and start to fade between 5 to 7 years after the first procedure while never changing colour. The colour just becomes less strong over time.

With Tattoos, the ink is placed deep within the skin, so deep, that it draws blood. Scalp micropigmentation only penetrates the 2nd dermal layer of the skin ensuring low pain, detailed semi-permanent results, and colour integrity.

With tattoos lasting as long as they do, they can lose colour and blur on the edges. This is a property that you cannot afford to have when one has thousands of follicle replications on one's head. The custom made pigments we use retain their shape and fade out of the skin before any blurring or colour migration would ever take place. Our specialised needles are custom made to be the width of real human hair, and our technicians are trained to use the proper method to ensure that each area of the scalp has the proper number of replicated hair for each replicated follicle. In real hair, you can have follicles with just one hair in them, or as many as 5 hairs per follicle. We are aware of these subtle nuances that make the whole scalp appear to be covered in real naturally growing hair.

In short, it is not a tattoo, but it is also not permanent makeup. Our method is something in between. A unique approach to hair loss, and worthy of its own classification.

Is it painful?

Scalp micropigmentation only penetrates the 2nd dermal layer, so the pain is minimal. Most clients do not feel pain and liken the procedure to a slight sting. We have had clients even fall asleep during a procedure! However, if one does find the procedure painful we can apply a high concentrate numbing solution to make your experience as easy and pain free as possible. Your comfort is a very high priority for us here at Benjamin Alexander SMP.

Can I go to a tattoo parlor to have this done?

For the same reasons we list how scalp micropigmentation is different than a tattoo, you would not want to go to a tattoo artist for this procedure. They operate different machinery, rotary frequency, needles sizes, and pigments. In fact, there are no pigments that exist in the tattoo industry; only inks. Inks do not hold their shape as well when placed into the skin in such small points. Even if a tattoo artist had the years of experience in follicle replication it takes to do it right, it would be impossible, With the inks and needles they use, to get the same look you would get from having this procedure professionally done with us. We have seen people that have attempted to have a tattoo artist tattoo their scalp and it does not turn out well. They end up with thousands of blurry spots on their head that look like marker tips, and if they had it done long enough ago, the colour has changed to be slightly blue or green. It is not worth the risk. Especially with something like the top of your head which will be exposed to people on a daily basis.

Can I go to a permanent makeup facility to have this done?

Just as you would not go to a tattoo parlor to have a scalp micropigmentation procedure done, you would not want to go to a permanent makeup tech. They operate different machinery, rotary frequency, needles, and pigments. They have set depths for their needles for different parts of the face, but do not work with the unique properties of the human scalp. And, most importantly, they do not have the years of experience working strictly on hair follicle replication that is necessary to perfect this proc

Am I a candidate for scalp Micropigmentation?

We have yet to come across a patient we have not been able to assist in some fashion. There are very few circumstances where an individual would not be helped by our services. To know with 100% certainty we would require an in-office consultation. Please fill out the contact form or give us a call today to setup your initial appointment.

How long does it last?

This all depends on an individual's body chemistry and how well they take care of their scalp. For some people that spend a lot of time outside (in the sun), they will need a touch-up in about 2-3 years after the procedure. Others, if they keep their scalp moisturized and protected from the sun, can have their results last 5-8 years without any touchups.

Do I need to have dark hair to have this procedure done?

It is not necessary to have dark hair for this procedure to work for you. All of our pigments are custom blended to match your natural hair colour so there is no hair colour that we will turn away. To get a free consultation regarding your concerns, please reach out to us via our contact page.

How long does the procedure take?

This depends on the amount of coverage needed on the scalp, one full coverage across the top of the head can take up to 4 hours. A typical treatment will require 2-3 sessions. You will be in a reclined medical chair for your comfort throughout the procedure.

Is it safe?

All equipment used during the procedure is 100% sterile and is disposed of immediately after the procedure is complete. Following the aftercare instructions will ensure proper healing and yield the best results.

Can I have this done if I’ve had a hair transplant?

Yes, most of our clients have had hair transplants and did not receive the amount of hair density they wanted or they simply just want their HT scar covered up. We provide both scalp micropigmentaion and scar camouflage.

Can I have this done if I am planning to get a hair transplant?

If you are planning on having a hair transplant done in the near future, you can still have the procedure done, just be aware that a hair transplant strip scar may prevent you from wanting to shave your head and will require additional work to cover up your new scar once it has healed. For the scalp micropigmentation process to give you the best results possible, we highly recommend getting follicular unit extraction done instead of the strip approach. This makes it so that you will not have the linear scar associated with strip removal hair transplants.
